Hello, blog. Yes, I've missed you too.
Before I get to the big Grey's Anatomy recap, allow me to give you my feelings (briefly) on the other shows that premiered this week and last week (and yes, all I do is go to school and watch television, what of it? And does anyone want to pay me for doing either of those things? ha):
Glee: If you're like me and you like singing, dancing, musicals, drama and over-the-top characters, this show is for you. I love it.
How I Met Your Mother: I have one thing to say about the season premiere - wooooooooooo! (also I'm still bitter NPH didn't win an Emmy. But that's a whole other issue)
The Big Bang Theory: awww, I love this show. However, I turned my television off in protest from 9-9:30 because I refuse to encourage the network to keep Two and a Half Men on the air (that is a terrible, terrible show)
And now, the main event. The two hour Grey's premiere. I knew it was going to be an eventful night when I was crying 20 seconds into the episode. Aside from a brief period during the whole Lexie "he's too tall to be George!" thing, we all knew Georgie was a goner, and even though TR Knight did not go about exiting his contract in a way I approve of, I thought the character had a really good sendoff. It was very interesting to see how it affected everyone differently. So let's get to it!
It makes me extremely nervous every time Bailey doesn't have anything to say. She was fairly silent for a large part of the evening, and when she did talk it was never what you'd call friendly. She told Meredith she was never allowed to talk again after Mer broke the news about George, she wanted no part of helping Arizona diagnose her patient, she went off on Christina with a level of animosity I would have not thought possible, and until Derek forced it out of her at the end, I don't think she talked to anyone else the entire evening. Her face when they went into the OR to see George was what set me off crying initially, I am amazed with how much emotion she can show with her face.
Poor Callie, I still tend to kind of forget that she was married to George because it was for so short a time and such a long time ago, but clearly his death affected her in a big way. Yes, they barely spoke anymore and now she's a lesbian, but still that dude was her husband. And she always loved his mom, which made it impossible for her to refuse the request to decide what to do with George's organs. The tirade against the Chief felt ever so slightly out of left field (particularly given how spectacularly she failed at being chief resident) but I guess someone had to leave for Mercy West to make this whole merger a bigger deal. I enjoyed all the inappropriate scenes with Mark while Lexie just sot of stood by with a hilarious look on her face.
And speaking of Lexie, I think I really like her as a doctor. She was pretty great with Ceviche/Clara (I did have to look up how to spell 'ceviche') and took all the abuse pretty well. I feel like a couple seasons ago that would have sent her crying into a supply closet. She was obviously bummed about George being gone and how they weren't exactly friends toward the end, but I'm glad that Mark listened to her and was supportive, and then I think, I THINK, she moved in with him! Hooray! Not that I blame her, I wouldn't want to walk in on Meredith and Derek having sex all over the place in a post post-it wedding glow. Yikes.
The Chief, oh the Chief. Poor little guy, feeling like a dinosaur and everything but still. Getting all attitudey with Derek for helping him out, yelling at Callie when she went to talk to him about her attending spot, getting in a car accident on the way to the board meeting, being all sneaky about the merger as a way to save his job. Not cool, my friend.
Christina never ceases to amaze me with her inappropriateness and her aversion to human feelings. Continuing the George jokes long after they stopped being funny and helpful for everyone, calling Clara 'Ceviche', scaring her off the bowel surgery, etc. And then there were Owen's therapy sessions. I'm not really sure how I feel about those, though I guess I'm glad they were able to have enough of a breakthrough to be allowed to have sex again (I'm assuming that was doctor-approved nookie) so she could finally deal with poor George's death. I'm guessing the therapy will continue, maybe Christina can work out some of her issues at the same time?
Meredith and Derek were all happy and newly 'married' though everyone else hated big-time on their pseudo wedding. I mean, there wasn't a whole lot of drama with the two of them for once, just Meredith waiting for the thing with George to sink in, which it obviously finally did. And since Ellen Pompeo is pregnant in real life I don't think she's gonna get super beefy storylines for the time being.
Finally, we have Izzie and Alex. I really didn't get what Alex's problem was for most of the night, but he made me love him last season so when he had his meltdown about how she had died in his arms and he couldn't survive losing her I was ready to forgive him for yelling at her when she told him how much she missed George. I mean, she had a rough few days there. She almost died, woke up to find that her best friend was dead, she was forced by the best friend's ex-wife to make all the decisions with regard to his organs ('George would give everything'), she was still going through chemo, found out that for the foreseeable future she's living with cancer though she's no longer important enough to merit her hot shot doctor for treatment (which was supposed to be good news) and her new husband refused to consummate the marriage. Yikes. Of course, Izzie prevails through all things. I mean seriously, she's had some rough stuff happen in her life, the list goes on and on. But eventually she gets through to everyone: telling the girl who wouldn't leave the hospital that she owed it to George to get a life because he couldn't anymore, and by being patient enough with Alex to give him what he needed in order to get what she needed (if that makes sense).
It was all very intense, and I'm pumped for the rest of the season! I'm glad the rest of the season is only one hour episodes, because there's just too much going on in two hours to cover!!
