casualty

This weekend I learned that the next time I'm belting out Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up" and I think it would be a good idea to do a big finish where I drop to my knees on a hardwood floor in true power ballad fashion, I will remind myself that it's not.

Jeans conundrum

I bought this pair of jeans a few months ago, as my other pair had some holes and were looking increasingly shabby (yes it's true.  I typically only have 1-2 pairs of jeans at any one time.  Maybe that makes me a freak).

The store I buy my jeans at recently changed their sizing to what I think is an unreasonably complicated system for picking out pants.  First you pick a color that you fall under (yellow, red or blue depending on shape), then you figure out your number (not a size, but a number from 1-8) and then length (petite, average, tall).  These factors are all supposed to come together to put you in jeans that fit you better than any jeans you've ever bought before.  It's very complex.  In fact, you can't even buy the pants for the first time without help from a sales associate to explain the system and give you an idea of where to start (believe me, I tried.  I stood staring at the wall o' jeans for 20 minutes looking like an idiot before I finally asked for help).  And now they're switching their other pants to this system, but it's still not like you find your combination and that's that.  Different pants will still fit differently so you have to figure it out for every style you want to buy.  PLEASE SOMEONE TELL ME HOW THIS IS A BETTER SYSTEM THAN REGULAR SIZES.  PLEASE.

Anyway, I found jeans, they fit the way I wanted them to, and I loved the color.  They were a little long, but it is not my fault that there's apparently 5 inches of difference between "average" and "petite" and if I have to choose between pants dragging on the floor and pants halfway up my ankle, I choose the floor.

The next number down (remember - not size, NUMBER.  I still don't get it) in these pants made me feel like a stuffed sausage, and that's not how you want to feel in jeans (or anything except sausage casing, I imagine).  So I made my purchase and went about my business.

Here's the problem.  Within about 4 hours of wearing these jeans out of the dryer, I look like I'm wearing a potato sack because they have stretched out so much.  It's very annoying.  I've been dealing with it, but it seems unreasonable that my choices were "too tight to wear in public" and "stretched out so far you look like you can't buy pants".

Yesterday I went shopping after work, and purchased another pair of jeans in the lower number.  I still think they're too tight (though Toni claims that isn't the case) and I'm paranoid that they won't stretch like the others.  For the next few days, at any rate, I'm going to be wearing them strictly around my apartment and doing lots of squats and lunges to see how they come along.

Anyway, I'm hoping that the new jeans will end up being perfect, but really I'm still irritated that I have to do crazy mathematical equations to buy freaking pants!  It should not be that hard!

lil bit

I really don't have anything of value to say (so far April is crappy for posting, isn't it?) but I did want to share with you a sign I saw in a bar I was at on Saturday:

"Street girls bringing in sailers must pay for a room in advance."

Awesome.

Saturday also saw the return of meat on a stick (it's actually chicken or beef teriyaki from a bar in Fanuel Hall called the Hong Kong, but whatever.  It's meat on a stick and it's great at 2 in the morning) which I shared with an extremely inebriated guy because I felt it necessary to prove to him that although the staff at the bar may have been mean by not letting him in at 2, their food was still very delicious.  I didn't stick around to get his final verdict, but his mouth was pretty full of chicken so I'm sure he didn't hate it.

Mosbius is a good word

On last night's How I Met Your Mother:

Of course Ted would name his company Mosbius Designs.  It's just the right amount of pretention and awesome.  I would like to know where he found the money to hire an assistant though.  And if I were his roommate I'd be slightly less than thrilled about the giant desk and copy machine in my living room, but I guess technically it is his apartment and Robin is living there.

And we start to see Cobie Smulders' pregnant belly being hidden.  Blousy shirts galore, my friends.

And speaking of pregnant bellies, I like how they sent Alyson Hannigan off for maternity leave by having Barney tell her a really dirty joke.  "And we didn't see Lily for four weeks..."  Well done.

The Marshall being sports guy thing wasn't really that funny to me, save for the part where he was walking down the street with $18K on him.

I'm glad that we're finally back to the Barney loves Robin storyline.  Except he's not in love with her, he just thinks she's awesome and he thinks about her all the time and he pictures them running toward each other in slow motion while he's wearing a suede vest.  Please don't confuse it with love.

That's about all I've got for this episode, so until we meet again!

It's a mad, mad, mad, mad world

Well, I hope you'll excuse the little break I had to take there.  Silly things like "work" and "life" get in the way sometimes.  Nothing to be done about it.

Last weekend I actually managed to leave both my apartment and my neighborhood behind and spent a night out in public, complete with other people, drinking, and basketball.

Yes, I'm talking about MSU's Final Four game against UConn.

HG2 and I headed down to the area near the Boston Garden (or the TD Banknorth Garden or whatever it is these days) to scope out bars that looked fun.  We found a good looking spot, got ourselves a table and waited for the big game to start.  Two things we noticed right away...there seemed to be a lot of drunk people around for 5:30 on a Saturday, and there were a lot of black and blue tshirts.  The reasons for this:  There was a Bruins game earlier in the afternoon at the Garden so people just filed out of there and into the bar to continue drinking, and everyone at this bar was either wearing a Bruins shirt or a UConn shirt.

Somehow it didn't really occur to me that a lot of people around here would be cheering for UConn, because it's not even in this state.  But then I figure, it's still New England, and these New Engladers stick together.

I was one of two MSU fans in the bar.  There were two people at the table next to us who were there to see UNC in the second game, and they ended up cheering with us.  That was it.  These two particularly drunk individuals sat down at a table on the other side of us, and within about 15 minutes realized that I was cheering at the 'wrong times' (HG2 was more subdued than I in his support, as he is in pretty much everything).  One guy looked at me and asked, "why are you clapping for THAT?" as though I were just a silly girl who didn't know when to cheer.  I politely turned to him and stated that my friend and I come from Michigan, which elicited this response:

"F#%$ YOU!  F#&$ MICHIGAN!  MICHIGAN STATE SUCKS!!!!!!!"

Which turned into a sort of a running commentary throughout the rest of the game.  At times more heated, at times less.  The first guy's friend sort of tried to explain it to me by saying he was from Connecticut, and UConn is all they have because there are no professional sports teams there and he knows all of the guys on the team and by the way would I check out his company's website and sign up?  This explanation was of course puncutated with 'eff you' and 'MSU sucks' and this drunk guy leaning closer and closer as he berated my team and me personally.  I thought the whole thing was pretty funny, but HG2 did offer to switch seats with me if I was uncomfortable.

Our neighbors' anger toward us was renewed every time we clapped, every time we cheered, pretty much every time they realized we were still there.  Meanwhile, on the other side, our new friends were cheering ever louder for the green and white in support.  After a few cocktails I became BFF with the girl who proceeded to unleash her entire life story on me (it was pretty juicy).  Her boyfriend was not terribly thrilled about the sharing of personal information, but he seemed pretty resigned to it, and probably (quite rightly) figured they would never see me again, what did it matter?

So with my new friend on my left and my new enemies on my right, I watched the Spartans take victory in what I like to think of was their actual championship game (not that I'm ashamed of them for Monday night, but I just think they left everything out there on Saturday).  After the game, and in the spirit of good sportsmanship, I turned to the guys on my right and congratulated them on a good game.  That got me this reponse:

F%&$ YOU, LEAVE THIS BAR.  I'M SERIOUS.  LEAVE.

I again smiled politely and turned back to friendlier faces.  After awhile that guy did come back to shake my hand, apologize, and let me know that he just gets really into these games.  I told him no problem, wished him a pleasant evening and watched as he and his fellow UConn fans filed out slowly, with their heads down in defeat.

HG2 and I had agreed with our new friends that because they were our allies in the first game, we would do our part and cheer for UNC in the second.  This lasted for about 20 minutes before the bar turned into a big dance party (poor HG2 had to look through a sea of dancing girls in order to see the basketball game.  How very hard for him) and my new friend had a little too much to drink and had to be carted off to her hotel by a less than pleased boyfriend.  However, he's the one who bought the second round of shots so he's really got no one to blame but himself.

The rest of the night was fairly routine, watched the rest of the game, got some pizza around midnight, headed home and crashed, then spent Sunday in a world of hurt (it was totally worth it).

We later discovered that the MSU alumni bar was next door to the bar we were at.  One door over and we would have been surrounded by people in green & white.  But somehow I think even if we had gotten the right bar, it wouldn't have been nearly as much fun.  Or crazy.

um. yea.

Things I have learned about myself in the last week or two because of highly addictive facebook quizzes:

In a past life, I was Marilyn Monroe.

If I were an 80's band, I would be Journey.

If I were an 80's movie, I would be The Princess Bride.

If I were a Steel Magnolias character, I would be M'Lynn.

If I were a muppet, I would be Miss Piggy.

My superhero name is "The Extraordinary Enigma"

I'm not sure what all of this says about me as a whole, but mostly I'm not sure what it is that compels me to keep taking these stupid quizzes.  All I know is when I see someone's results for some completely meaningless quiz, I feel like I need to take it so I see how I measure up.

It's possible I need to spend less time on facebook.

insert title of your choosing

tvguide.com seems to have completely stopped recapping How I Met Your Mother which is very distressting to me.  At the same time, I don't want to be that girl who only writes recaps of movies and tv shows (oh wait, that's really the only reason any of you come here, isn't it?  ISN'T IT?!!? Ahem, sorry).

I don't have a whole lot to say about last night's episode, though I did enjoy it.

One of my favorite things is how when Old Ted is telling a story, the people change to reflect how they interpret the story.  That's a really crappy way of saying how I like that Robin's older boyfriend was played by an 80 year old a couple seasons ago and how I liked that the other team for the kindergarten basketball game was made up of high school aged kids.

Also, as an aside - I totally agree with Marshall about the competition aspect.  If you don't like competition, don't put your children in competitive sports.  Put them in yoga or something.  Thus ends my PSA about a subject of which I have no direct knowledge.

How old is Robin supposed to be?  We know Ted is 30, Barney is somewhere between 32 and 35, you can assume that Lily and Marshall are also 30 because they were in college with Ted, but what about Robin?  Ted talked to her like she was a whipper snapper and she didn't seem to have any trouble doing the things on the Murtaugh list with Barney (well, pretty much just the rave, but you get the idea).  So are we thinking like 25, 26?  I had just always assumed she and Ted were the same age.  This bothers me more than it probably should.

What are we possibly expected to do with Barney being banned from Laser Tag for life?  I half expected him to end the episode by purchasing the Laser Tag place.  I feel we haven't seen the end of this.

And now you'll have to excuse me because I just dropped a ream of paper on my foot and I need to whine about it.

I heart Target.

Here's my weekend in a nutshell: basketball, singstar, shopping, shopping, movie, shopping, basketball, movie, slide show (HG2.0 is back!).

I know it sounds like I did approximately three things all weekend, but seriously, it was busy!  And fun!  Yesterday afternoon especially, with the basketball watching (MSU!!!) and this absolutely delicious Ceaser salad with homemade dressing (I didn't make it but you can bet your bottom dollar I got that recipe).  I wish I had taken a photo because of the massive size of this salad.  It was, in a word, Uge (purposely spelled that way).  And it did not have any anchovies whatsoever so it's delicious even for the non fish eating people of the world.  Some of whom can expect to eat this the next time I see them.  You know who you are.

Instead, what I have a picture of is the fabulous new bag I got from Target on Saturday:

I love everything about it, and I most of all love the fact that due to a gift card situation I had, this baby was less than $5 out of pocket and it holds EVERYTHING.  I have become a giant-holds-everything-handbag lover.  But you'll notice it doesn't have a giant clock on the front.  Oh well, you can't have everything I guess.

Allow me to also quickly tell you that Target has so many adorable decorative scarves at the moment that I almost put down the bag and spent all of my money on as many scarves as possible, with this whole plan about I was going to become a fabulous lady who wears scarves all the time and has perfect hair (I feel like those two things go together.  Perfect hair and decorative scarf wearing).

Luckily I remembered two vitally important facts at the last minute.  One - my hair is about as far from perfect as possible and I would only let down my fellow scarf wearers (a burden I could not bear).  Two (and probably more importantly) - I hate having anything close to my neck.  I can barely even wear necklaces because I feel like they're biding their time to strangle me.  It takes all of my willpower to wear a scarf when it's cold outside and I need it for warmth.  But that should tell you just how cute these scarves were.  They were pretty great.

recap city

I know I said I wasn't posting for the rest of the week, but seriously.  I can't NOT recap last night's Grey's Anatomy.  It would just feel wrong.

So last night's episode:

Holy crap when Owen was choking Christina I was freaking out.  Big time.  The marks on her neck were pretty intense, but I really wasn't that surprised when she forgave him and hugged him and wouldn't break up with him (yea yea I'll get to that).  I don't blame Meredith for telling her that her turtleneck was gross, but not as gross as her hugging Owen after he choked her.  If my friend's boyfriend left marks like that on her neck I'd want to kill him too.

The fact that I like Christina and Owen so much as a couple made it all the more heartbreaking when she told him she couldn't be with him because she was afraid to sleep next to him.  Can't really blame her for that one.  But here's hoping he lets Derek help him get better and we can have take 2 of Owen and Christina's relationship.  Also I heard that Amy Madigan is coming back as the shrink, which is good.  I liked her.

I'm very happy to have regular Derek back, and his non-proposal proposal in the elevator was perfect for those two.  Only a couple of surgeons would discuss their relationship in terms of brains they had operated on together.  It was cute.  I did like how he kept trying to give the ring to her sort of like a lost puppy hoping she would take it and lead him where he needed to go, and I especially liked that she didn't fall for it.  Excellent stuff.

And now Izzie.  I knew we were headed for an Alex breakdown and it did not disappoint me.  He asked himself/Meredith every question I had in my head about why he didn't see this coming, and he even called out that he was so used to crazy chicks in his life that he didn't think twice when she said she was seeing a ghost.  I teared up when he started talking about how it was crap and that wasn't how he and Izzie were supposed to make babies, I'm not gonna lie.

Even though the superfriends were all sort of crappy leading up to Izzie's surgery because they were avoiding her and scared and all that, one of my favorite parts was when Alex crawled into Izzie's bed after the surgery and the following transpired (these quotes are probably not accurate, I don't have DVR to review so this is all from memory):

Izzie (drowsy and out of it): hey...
Alex: I splooged in a cup for you today.
Izzie: thanks?

I don't know why, but it was sort of perfect for them.  Alex has come a long way but he's still sort of emotionally stunted, so that is a pretty believable way that he would tell her that he loves her and he's there for her.

I'm gonna need some Izzie/George resolution soon, though.  We started tonight when he was smashing things and Callie came to talk some sense into him.  He's angry and a little insulted, and I can understand that but he's still George so he'll still do the right thing in the end.  And let's make that the next episode shall we?  Thanks.

Speaking of the next episode, the fact that this one did not end with a "next week...." segment, that makes me fear that we won't see a new episode for awhile.  Bummer.

break

I'm feeling a little out of it this week, and I'm not sure what my problem is exactly (though I think it may be the plague...it's been going around).

Anyway, I wanted you all to have fair warning, I'm pretty sure I'm taking the rest of the week off from posting.

Have a good one!

if only I were in charge of everything

Last night I went to go see what I thought would be a funny, entertaining movie with a couple of friends (on a school night, no less!).  It was a 9:50 showing of I Love You, Man.  9:50 on a Sunday night.  I don't know why, but I expected that people who go to movies late on Sunday evening would know how to behave.

I was so, so mistaken.

The movie itself was funny, and I'm sure I would have enjoyed it (though we agree - it's no Role Models).  However, I can't be too sure until a second viewing because I definitely missed stuff thanks to the rudeness of EVERY OTHER PERSON IN THE THEATER.

It was so bad.  At this point I'm pretty immune to one (or two) person(s) in a theater acting inappropriately (talking, playing with their cell phone, etc) and I've gotten pretty good at tuning it out so that it doesn't affect my movie going experience.  This was on a whole other level.

The first sign of trouble came about 10 minutes before the movie was set to begin, when a large group of people walked in with several children in tow.  Children.  To an R-rated movie.  At 9:50 on Sunday night.  Children age 8 and below.  Couple of infants.  So not the right decision.

The women sitting in front of us chose to make liberal use of the fact that the seats rocked which would have been annoying enough, but I'm pretty sure they never stopped chatting for the entire movie, except for the 3 or 4 times they had to get up and move around.

The man sitting to my left had quite possibly one of the most obnoxious laughs I've ever heard, but I try not to judge.  I was too busy being irritated at the asides he kept giving to his friends and the repetition of lines that had just been said on screen.

The couple sitting behind and to the left of me were having some sort of relationship discussion or something, with no effort whatsoever to keep their voices down, no matter how many dirty looks I gave them.

The group right behind me was doing much the same, but also apparently working on some plans for after the movie, if the cell phone conversations were any indication.  "What?  I'm at the movie.  No it's the end.  NO IT'S THE END OF THE MOVIE."  Several people shushed them at one point, but that only made them louder in defiance.

Another guy sitting to the right kept pulling out his cell phone and playing with it during the movie as well.  It was at that perfect angle where every time he lit up the screen it caught the corner of my eye.  I'm pretty sure he took a couple of calls as well.

At one point in the middle of the movie, one of the infants got hold of a rattle.  And shook it for a good five to ten minutes.

There were side conversations going on all through the theather, and I know I missed quite a bit of dialog (which is partly due to the fact that the sound really wasn't as high as I'm used to in a movie theater).

All things said and done, it was pretty unbelieveable.  The best part is that it wasn't just a regular theater, it was this deal called the "Director's Hall" where the seats are supposed to be nicer, they're assigned, and the theater employees will take your order and bring concessions to you if you so choose.  So of course, the tickets are like $12.50.  Nothing like paying extra for a worse experience (before you ask, we didn't complain and ask for our money back.  We probably could have, but it was late and we were tired and they are kind of jerks there so it's not guaranteed they would have done anything anyway.  Plus, I didn't actually pay for my own ticket and I hate to complain because I don't want people to think I'm high maintenance).

I officially don't love any of the people in that theater, man (you know, except for the people I went with who actually know how to behave in public).

just a guy in the woods with some beer

Last night's Grey's episode:

Every time they showed "Blow Hole" I kept thinking to myself that the thing that guy had to be wearing to keep his lips pushed back probably started to really hurt after awhile.  Or they were using some more of the same CGI action they used for Two-Face in The Dark Knight.  Either way, yikes. His internet orchid club friends were so cute, especially the older lady.

I like Derek's mountain man beard.  I also like how they showed how dynamic a guy he is that when people go out to help snap him out of it he really just manages to sink them down into his depression.  Of course, Bailey did send quite possibly two of the most damaged people at that hospital to go get him, so that could have been a factor.

Good for the Chief not falling into his trap though, "because I'm older than you."  He knows better, Man.  Patrick Dempsey is kind of scary when he's mad.  I wouldn't want to be alone with him.

The intern love triangle was pretty funny, but nothing really stands out about it other than George finally got something to do for more than 10 seconds.  Meredith's 'bailey' speech in the bathroom was pretty funny.

I'm not sure I buy Mark letting Lexie scrub in and actually do stuff on his face transplant surgery, even if he is sleeping with her.  Remember a few seasons ago when he wouldn't even let Alex touch his patient?  Clearly it was a two person job to lift the face and position it, but I feel like he would have wanted Bailey or Callie or at least one of the non-interns to help on this surgery he's working toward for three years, I don't care how smart Lexie is.  But then we wouldn't have had all the other interns making fun of them.  I know he picked Izzie and then kicked her out when she started screaming at her interns, but why not get Alex or somebody else?

When Christina finally caved and told Alex and Bailey about Izzie right before cutting, at first I was like, "um, isn't that a major HIPAA violation?"  But then I was ok with it because even though Christina is A doctor, she's not Izzie's doctor, so she can pretty much tell whoever she wants.  I liked how she had to get it off her chest in order to be able to do her surgery (although I was clearly wrong in my prediction of how long it would take for everyone to find out).

Alex's seeming lack of a reaction is making me a little nervous, I do think that means we're headed for a meltdown.  However, as he's shown us, Alex Karev does a meltdown pretty well so it'll be good TV when it happens.

Now this could be me totally reading into things, but why did it seem like George's arrival on the 'turn Izzie into the patient' scene was the most dramatic?  He rushes in, their eyes meet, an understanding passes between them... and he was the only one who picked up something was wrong starting back weeks ago, despite the fact that he's been keeping his distance.  I guess I'm just not sure how he picked up that something was seriously wrong with her before Alex did.  Unless it's because Alex is so used to crazy (his mom, Ava) that nothing can really phase him anymore, which I guess I can go along with.  Still it seems like maybe Alex shouldn't have been totally blindsided when Christina blurted in the middle of surgery.  Though it would probably make for a less impressive meltdown later if he already suspected something.

Meredith was all about the speeches last night, first to the interns and then to Derek when she told him she would not still love him if he weren't a surgeon.  When she first said it I was like, 'whoa, harsh' but then she explained herself and it makes total sense.  I'm not sure I could respect someone with a gift for saving lives who just walks away from it either.  And in the end I think it was what he ultimately needed to hear.  Sort of a 'yea you messed up and killed somebody this time, but you are still one of twenty people in the world with a particular skill set and the people who come to you don't have much chance anyway so clearly a lot of them are going to die but get over it and get back to doing what you do.'

I'm really looking forward to every remaining episode this season, which is pretty great.

I just totally caved and broke my own rule.  I pre-ordered Twilight on DVD even though they're only coming out with a multi-disc special edition.

I am a dirty, no good hypocrite.

In my defense...no, there is no defense.  It's ridiculous.  I have no self control.

*sigh

nice little break

Yesterday, as I'm sure you know, was Evacuation Day (yea, and you thought it was St. Patrick's Day, pshhh) (for those of you who don't know, it's the day those dirty Redcoats left our shores) which means that state workers in Suffolk County got the day off.  Which further means that people who happen to work in state buildings got yesterday off.

I had yesterday off and I did not have one drop of alcohol.

It was a beautiful sunny day.  I slept in, I went to breakfast, I went shopping, I went to a movie, I went to the grocery store, I took a leisurely stroll through both downtown Boston and quaint little Winthrop, I made a failed attempt to get a Shamrock Shake because apparently not every McDonald's carries them, which is total crap.  But it's ok, instead I had ice cream for lunch at the movies.  Which I realized later was an ice cream cookie sandwich (you see the issue there?) but I'm giving myself a pass because a) I didn't realize it was a sandwich at the time (I ordered the 'cookie thing' and pointed so you see I wasn't even thinking it and it was an honest mistake and b) it was (sort of) a holiday.

I'M NOT PERFECT, DON'T JUDGE ME.

Oh, sorry.  Sometimes I get carried away.  It was a lovely day off, I wish I had another one!

that was a crazy game of singstar...

Weekends 'round here have been on the tame side lately, with a serious lack of wild times and crazy shenanigans.  Which is always worthwhile every now and again, particularly when people are trying to save money for various real life things they have going on.

Many of our Fridays recently look like this:

I hang out with the girls right after work on Friday, we either go shopping, take in a movie, etc.  Afterward we start thinking about getting some dinner at which time we call Sacha and he shoots that down because he won't leave his apartment, so we just go to Floyd's Cove and hang out where Sacha tries to convince me to watch Wife Swap or all of us to play SingStar.   I always say no to the first, and we all usually shoot down the second because we're tired or someone is falling asleep already or some people have bad voices (me) and other people cheat and win all the time like punks BUT IT'S FINE. ahem.

The rest of our weekends usually look like this:

Everyone else has grownup things to do because they actually are grownups and I am not so I watch a lot of movies and basically do nothing of value.

However, this past Saturday I got a text from Toni fairly early letting me know that Sacha and Alisa had decided to go to NYC all spur of the moment and she (Toni) opted not to go.  We decided we'd do fun girlie movie time or something later on.

Round about 5:00 I got a phone call from Toni, stating that she had been sitting on her couch all day (I was doing much the same) and that maybe we should go out for a drink somewhere.  I immediately jumped on this as a fantastic idea and we set about deciding where to go.  Someplace with an ok vibe, that's pretty chill, and easy to get to (i.e. doesn't require actually driving into Boston, or driving anywhere for that matter).  We finally settle on this hotel/restaurant that's actually in our neighborhood and while I've heard bad things about the food (apparently everything tastes like Ritz crackers) it has a cute little lounge, so we put on our fancy shoes and had some cocktails (it is a universal truth that everything is better with fancy shoes).

After about three hours and four drinks each, we came to the conclusion that perhaps having skipped dinner was not the best way to go.  We set off for Floyd's Cove, in search of food.  Upon getting into the house, we took one look at each other and determined (quite rightly) that neither of us was in any condition to operate an oven.  We ordered pizza, and then proceeded to pour ourselves some more drinks (because clearly that was what we needed).  After eating the glorious, glorious pizza, Toni had the brilliant idea of playing SingStar.

Let me tell you, we are a couple of talented ladies.  TALENTED.  I think you'd be hard pressed to find two people who can belt out a power ballad with more gusto than the two of us (particularly after several cocktails).  Add in the dance moves and forget about it.  You can't take us.  We played until about two in the morning when finally our voices were getting so hoarse we could barely speak anymore, let alone sing.

I collected my belongings and returned to my apartment, where I collapsed into my bed.

It was a fantastic evening, and I most definitely paid for it with a hangover all day yesterday which caused me to go to bed at 7:30 and sleep until this morning.  I'm not quite the rock star I used to be (except when I'm playing SingStar, obviously).

fallout

Finally, the glorious return of Grey's Anatomy.  Oh, how I've missed it.

Overall, I thought this was a pretty great episode.  As always, here are my thoughts:

Derek all disheveled and un-showered on the couch eating Alex's cereal and sitting on Lexie's keys while the roommates huddle together and talk about him = awesome

Derek all dressed up for his meeting with the lawyers sinking into depression about his death rate and walking out on the Chief = not so good

Derek drunkenly hitting beer cans (and a diamond ring) with a baseball bat after having moved all his stuff out of Meredith's house = very bad news

I was proud of Meredith in the last scene where she refused to be scared off by all the terrible things he was saying to her, I am actually kind of enjoying the role reversal where she's the grownup and he's the scared running away one.  But only if this gets worked out very quickly; I'll buy that she's healed these days but I will not buy that she's going to sit around and let him yell mean things at her for a long time.  She's an extraordinary woman, after all.

I enjoyed Mark making fun of Derek for his "creepy, perfect hair" and I'm not really mad at him for not trying to talk to Derek since the fight.  Granted, Mark has not always been the world's greatest friend, but he's taken a lot of crap from Derek over the years, and now when he's finally trying to be honorable he gets crapped on again.  That being said, I don't think he'll hold out much longer before he tries to break D out of zombie mode.  After all, he's all put back together now, thanks to Lexie (say it together now, awww).

I'm glad we finally know what's wrong with Izzie, a mo8p7aw[03oij aw; melanoma (or something close to that), she's only got a few months and a 5% survival rate.  FINALLY, WE KNOW.  I think the rest of the season is going to be her sort of saying goodbye to everyone (like she started to do with Alex and Meredith/Christina last night).  I teared up a little when Alex was excited about being the future of the hospital but he didn't want it if she wasn't right there with him.  Uh oh.  Last night I found myself thinking 'she's working on another Emmy nomination out of the rest of this season.'  If she keeps it up like last night, I'd say she's well on her way.  Good stuff.

I think we can also finally prepare for George to have some more meaty storylines, as we have discovered that he's been keeping his distance because of Alex, but he still cares and he's still here.  I predict he will come through big time when the secret is finally out.

Speaking of which, how long do you think until the secret is finally leaked?  I have to imagine it'll be at least a couple of weeks.  First we'll have to go through all of the Christina and Izzie drama now that Christina is the only person who knows.  I like that that was the first choice of people to tell because she's a robot who can take it.  I'm finally excited to see what's going to happen next, instead of frustrated and impatient for it to hurry up and get there.  I think Alex will be the last person to find out, and he'll probably first guess something wrong, like that she's sleeping with George again when he suddenly starts hanging around more.

Christina and Owen get more and more interesting every week.  I love that dynamic, where he's terrified of what he might do to her because he's so damaged and she's pretty much having to prove over and over that she can take it and she's not some fragile lady (like his ex fiancee).

Christina and Meredith talking about their respective man trouble at lunch was great, I've missed those kinds of conversations.  Izzie's commentary was excellent, "you guys are hilarious.  Do you even know what she just said?"  The nursing home bit about them talking at each other without their hearing aids was good stuff.

I love love love that Bailey called Adele in to smack sense into the Chief.  It may have been a little childish, but your options are pretty limited when the person you're having conflict with won't speak to you.  It felt like an extra prize or something...not only did we get a Bailey speech, but we got an Adele speech to go with it.  Love it!  Hopefully the Chief will finally simmer down about the peds thing and tap into his soft side to bring the hospital back together.

I don't have a lot to say about Callie this week, though I did like her exchange with Mark after she used him to hide from 'Arizona' due to embarassment over the bar situation.

The patients this week were pretty good: the band kid with the heart issue, the siblings with the scary stomach cancer.

I can't wait for next week!

reasons to love apartment living

My apartment is one of about 5 in a house.

When I was young, I always thought that living in an apartment would mean there were always people to chat with as you passed your neighbors coming in and out of your place, probably there would be that one kooky neighbor who always came over, and the landlord would often be around fixing little things or generally maintaining the property.

I blame TV and movies for this.

In my building now, I couldn't pick most of my neighbors out of a lineup.  In fact, I don't think I have ever actually seen a person enter or exit the apartment across from mine.  Sometimes the door is ajar, and someone listens to music with a really repetitive baseline on weekends, and they do a lot of Spanish karaoke at 1am, but they could just be vampires who like Spanish music.  If that were the case, it would definitely make them the coolest neighbors I have.

The other apartment on my floor (the door is on my floor, the apartment is actually on the floor above) has an indeterminate number of people living there, but one of them is a small child who they bring in and out around 11:00pm and who is always crying.  I'm not exaggerating when I say that every time the child comes in or goes out it is throwing a tantrum of some kind.   When the child is not being dragged in and out screaming, it is running back and forth across the floor (my ceiling) at about 7:00am on the weekends, wearing combat boots or something close.

The downstairs neighbors who share the main entrance are extremely unfriendly and they have a golden retriever who barks nonstop (pets are not actually allowed in my house) and the only contact I have had with them is when they first moved in and my shower leaked into their apartment and the guy came whining to me about it like I would be able to do anything for him.  I am still trying to determine if they're a married couple or brother and sister (they have the same last name, which I know from looking through the mail which all gets tossed on this little table in the front vestibule).  If they hear anyone on the stairs at the same time they are leaving their apartment, the door slams and the dog starts barking, and they wait there until whoever it is has passed.  If by some chance I do happen to pass one of them and give a little smile and nod, they give a look that says they'd prefer to punch me in the face rather than greet me, and they just keep walking.

The final neighbors actually live around the side of the house so I hardly ever see them, but at least I get a smile and a nod from the lady whenever we do happen to run into each other.

As for my landlord, they really only ever come out to the house when someone calls to tell them something is broken.  And sometimes not even then.  The dryer in the basement broke in April of 2007 and I'm still not sure it's fixed (I stopped going into our basement, it looks like a scene straight out of a horror movie and I know better than to willing walk into a space where someone is likely to come at me with a chainsaw).  It took over a week for me to get them out when my shower was leaking, which is when I really came to appreciate indoor plumbing (I had to use friends' showers, it was not fun).  It took over 24 hours to get an electrician in when my bedroom fan/light fixture fell out of the ceiling (which seemed like a fire hazard).  And after months and months of the lights not working properly in the public hallway, I finally called on Monday to ask them to fix it (yes, I probably should have called earlier, but I would argue that it's not unreasonable to expect someone to show up at least once in three months to check the place out).

I will say that not only did they fix the lights, but they put in all new fixtures and a light sensor.  It's pretty great not fearing for my life when I come home at night because I can't see the stairs at all.

So I'm left to wonder, is it me?  Are other places more neighbor/landlord friendly?  Someday I'd like to live in one of those places.

further evidence that I am a total freakshow

I realize that this may be one of the strangest posts I've ever written, but all I can tell you is the mind wanders where it wanders, and that's what I put here.

There are random pieces of misfortune that have never happened to me (so far) and I secretly (well, not anymore) want to experience them just to know what it would be like.  I'm not saying I would enjoy any of them, it's more a sort of morbid curiosity as to how I would handle it.

I'm not talking major catastrophes or anything, more like this:

  • Getting stuck in an elevator (would I get all claustrophobic and freak out?  Or would I be a cool customer and wait patiently for help to arrive?)

  • Being punched in the face (would I pass out?  Punch back?  Get a black eye?)

  • related: throw a punch (would I break my hand?  Even make a connection?  Have any force behind it whatsoever?)

  • Getting stitches (this one kind of surprises me.  For as many injuries as I've sustained due to being completely accident prone, I've never had stitches - wisdom teeth don't count.  Do they hurt?  Would the sight of them gross me out? Would I have a cool scar?)

So, these are the sorts of things I think about pretty regularly, and part of the reason I think there may be something wrong with me. :)

'Karen'

The day after whatever shows I like are on, I always go online to read the recap and see if other people noticed/liked the same things that I noticed/liked.  I also just like to relive things, which is why I will watch a movie over and over, buy TV shows on DVD and read every email I get at least three times.

Imagine my dismay when the recap for last night's How I Met Your Mother failed to show up on tvguide.com.  Talk about your day ruiner (oh wait, no that was falling on the ice).  I have decided to take matters into my own hands and do a rcap of my own.

Let me start out by saying that Dane Cook has this bit where he talks about how there's one person in every group of friends that nobody else really likes very much.  His hypothetical friend is named Karen, and his zinger is that behind her back everyone always says, "Karen is such a douche."  That immediately sprung to mind when Ted's ex girlfriend showed up and she was clearly pretty douchy, and her name was Karen.  Set the tone right away.

These are my highlights:

Laura Prepon looked way better in last night's show than she did during the entire run of That 70's Show.  I don't know why.

I love how the flashbacks always bring back situations that we're already familiar with instead of manufacturing new ones to fit the circumstances (which I think shows how great the writing is in this show).  Barney having a meal with Wendy the waitress and Robin having a meal with the sports guy from Metro News One (both from "The Platinum Rule"*).

I like how Barney is still convinced that Wendy is trying to kill him, even though she may be the least psycho ex girlfriend anyone's ever had.

This may just be me, but the waiter from when Ted was having lunch with Karen looked a LOT like Scooter to me.  I'd have to watch it again to see if it really was him, but after he and Lily had lunch and he said that if she liked waiters he'd be the best waiter ever, if they got someone who looked just like him to actually play a waiter, that's tricky.  I prefer to think it was actually him.  Which would make sense, because Lily grew up in NYC (right?) and he was her high school boyfriend so it's not completely outside the realm of possibility.

I think the rest of the season is going to see a lot more scenes taking place at the bar because of both Lily and Robin being pregnant in real life.  You can't exactly tone down both the female leads' parts at the same time.  I don't really have an opinion on this, I'm just making an observation.

I like how Marshall didn't go home after work to change out of the pants that Barney shredded, but just kept on wearing them.  That might have been funnier than the whole pants story (with the exception of Barney's reaction to it).

The funniest part of Robin's sleeping pill sleepwalking was when she saw Ted and Karen making out on the couch and said, "Hi Ted, hi Lily.  Don't worry, I won't tell Marshall."

When Ted was breaking up with Karen and he said, "blah blah blah, au revoir" and Karen replied, "actually, au revoir means 'until I see you again' blah blah blah" I thought of "Spoiler Alert"* when Robin noticed that Ted is always correcting people with "actually..."  So I guess we know where he got that.

It looks as though Karen will be back again next week, I hope the shenanigans get outrageous.  I'm trying to figure out who I think Ted will catch her sleeping with.  Originally I was going to say Barney, but since we already went there with Robin I think someone else.  Maybe someone random, but I think it would be better if it was someone we've seen before.  Oooh, maybe she'll officially come on to Marshall and Lily will take her out.  That would be pretty sweet.

*It's entirely possible that I watch this show too much.  I'm ok with that.

I gotta tell you, it's kind of shaping up to be a throwaway sort of week.  The most exciting things happening this week so far are:

I found the shoes I'm hoping to wear with my bridesmaid dress in Sacha & Toni's wedding.  They should be here by the end of the week.  I hope they're just as magical and spectacular as i think they are.

I ordered Role Models on DVD, which will be sitting on my doorstep when I get home.  That movie was one of the funniest I have seen in a LONG time.  It's sort of wrong and my mother is definitely not allowed to watch it (nor would she want to), but seriously.  Hilarious.

And...yea that's really it.  I saw Watchmen on Sunday, it was spectacular.  The soundtrack is top notch, I downloaded it immediately upon getting home from the theater.

So you see, I'm very boring.  And I fell on the ice getting off the bus this morning.  One step on the sidewalk, straight onto my bum.  Trying to figure out a way to sit without my left side hitting the chair has made for an interesting day thus far.  And my pants are dirty, so I look a little like a sloppy freak who doesn't know how to sit or do laundry.  I mean, it is Tuesday after all.
